Can British citizens apply for an ESTA?

British citizens can apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) visa waiver to travel to the United States. The ESTA allows citizens of Britain to visit the U.S. for tourism, business, transit, medical and short study purposes without a visa for up to 90 days per visit. Britain was added to the Visa Waiver Program in 1996. However, security measures, intended to address terrorism threats, have necessitated the pre-screening of travelers prior their arrival to the United States.

The ESTA was established in 2009 for the purposes of streamlining the processing of visa waiver applicants and to provide U.S. Customs and Border Protection, as well as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with the capability to pre-screen travelers against numerous no-fly, criminal, and terrorist list databases. Thus, since 2009 British citizens have been required to obtain an approved ESTA application to enter the United States.

Can A British Citizen Stay Longer Than 90 Days?

Any British citizen that wishes to enter the United States for over 90 days, or for other purposes than those allowed under the ESTA program will need to apply for a different visa. Further details can be found by visiting the US Department of State website and using the free "Visa Wizard tool".

Can A British Citizen Extend Their ESTA Beyond 90 Days?

Once you have been admitted to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not entitled to extend your stay beyond the initial 90 day period. You must therefore depart the United States within that 90 day period. To find out more information about extending your stay you can visit the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

Can A British Citizen Change Their Status After Entering The US?

After you have entered the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change your status in the United States. To find out more information please visit the Change My Nonimmigrant Status page on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

When Should A British Citizen Apply For An ESTA?

It is advised that British citizens complete their ESTA application 72 hours prior to their departure date. Full details can be found by visiting ESTA requirements or the ESTA FAQ's page. It is advised to review these pages prior to starting an ESTA application to avoid any delays or the risk of an ESTA being refused.

It is a requirement to be a full British citizen before applying for a United States ESTA, so travellers holding a passport or travel document with a different status will be required to apply for a full US visitor visa, and not an ESTA.

How do I apply for an ESTA?

  • Fill out and complete your application online – double check your passport number and the passport-issuing country as these cannot be changed later and you will need to initiate a new application process.
  • Submit the completed application
  • Be sure to check your information before making payment
  • Make your payment
  • Wait to receive confirmation of your ESTA status via email

Here is a breakdown of each of those steps for a clearer understanding of how to go about your application process:

[1] Fill out and complete your application online

You will need to supply information on:

  • Basic personal information
  • Passport information (your passport needs to be one issued from a VWP participating country)
  • Employer information
  • Address and contact person or organization within the U.S.
  • A contact that can be used in emergency situations
  • Credit Card information
  • Answers to eight pertinent security questions

If you are making a group application, please be sure to fill out an application for each individual who will be travelling to the United States. This includes minors and infants. Each individual who wishes to travel to the U.S. under the VWP is required to have a travel authorization.

Double check your details here, especially your passport information.

[2] Submit your application

Send your application after ensuring that your answers are indeed correct. If you need to make a quick correction, you can go back to the application by choosing the previous button BEFORE submitting your application.

[3] Take down your application number and store it somewhere you’ll remember it

Your application number will come in handy at a later stage if you need to check your application status or to update your application details. Along with your application number, you will need to supply your passport number and date of birth to access this information.

[4] Make your payment

Again, be sure to check your information before making payment as there are certain data fields you will not be able to change post-payment submission. You have up to 7 days to make your payment after initiating your application whether your application is a single application or a group application.

To make your payment, simply enter the required credit card information. Payment is required for processing the application, and then upon acceptance and approval of your travel authorization, a fee is required for approval.

[5] How to view your application status

You’re likely to receive your application status immediately; otherwise you will need to wait approximately 72 hours if you do not receive it immediately. The system will automatically issue you information that you can use to check your application status in the event that your status has come back with a pending notification.

You can receive one of the following three responses to your application:

  • Authorization Approved

If you receive this message, it means that you can now travel to the U.S. using your approved travel authorization under the VWP. Please note that this still does not guarantee your entry into the U.S. You will receive confirmation of the application approval and your payment receipt.

  • Travel not Authorized

You have not received authorization to travel to the U.S. under the VWP. However, a failed travel authorization does not necessarily revoke your entry into the U.S. entirely. If you still wish to travel to the U.S. you will need to obtain a visa for this purpose. You can find more information on visa applications on the www.travel.state.gov platform.

If your application is not accepted and you receive the travel not authorized status, it simply means that you cannot travel to the U.S. under the VWP and you will need to find another avenue for travel.

  • Authorization Pending

If you receive this status you could wait up to 72 hours for a definitive answer. Don’t fret though as it doesn’t necessarily denote a negative outcome. You can stay updated by checking your status using your previously stored application number, passport number and date of birth. To check your status, please visit the check your application page.

How Long Does It Take To Receive An ESTA?

British citizens can expect their ESTA application to normally be processed and approved within 30 minutes, and the authorization is sent by email in the form of a PDF document. There is no need to print or present any documents at the airport, as the ESTA is stored electronically against the passport in the US Immigration system.

What if I am denied an ESTA?

In the event a British citizen is denied or ineligible for ESTA, or wishes to visit the United States for more than 90 days or for other travel purposes than those allowed under ESTA, then the British passport holder would need to apply for the relevant U.S. visa.

British citizens must apply online for ESTA. An ESTA is required prior to boarding the land, air or sea vessel to the United States, and should be applied for at least 72 hours before departure. A valid, un-expired electronic passport must be used for the ESTA application. Applicants can review the detailed ESTA requirements as well as visit the ESTA FAQ for more information before starting on their ESTA application.

An approved ESTA application does not provide a British citizen the same level of rights as a U.S. visa holder. A U.S. visa applicant will need to file a more comprehensive application form, called the DS-160 and attend an interview at a U.S. consulate or embassy. Furthermore, depending on the type of visa, applicants may need to prepare additional documents to prove the genuineness of their U.S. travel plans and purposes before entering the country.

Will I need to take a printed version of my travel authorization to show at the airport?

There is no need to print out your travel authorization, as the system is fully electronic and your land, sea or air carrier will be able to obtain your ESTA status information from the DHS. It might be a good idea to print out the paper so as to have confirmation on hand and keep a record of your application number.

How private is the ESTA website?

The ESTA website abides by the regulations set out by the United States Privacy Act. It’s also hosted and operated by the U.S. government and they have implemented technology to ensure the security of data and other vital information on the website. You can review the current DHS's data privacy measures here.

What should my computer have in order to successfully submit an application on the ESTA platform?

The minimum requirements are an internet browser with 128-bit encryption support. The browser should be updated to the latest version with JavaScript enabled and set to accept cookies. All major browsers are supported, however if you are experiencing problems, do be sure to check the minimum requirements above. If you still continue to experience problems, try using a different browser.

Under what circumstances would I need to re-apply for an ESTA?

Here are the possible scenarios which could require a new travel authorization:

  • You undergo a name change
  • You have been issued a new passport, for whatever reason.
  • You undergo a gender change
  • Your country of citizenship changes
  • If your circumstances have changed and it directly affects the validity of some of the questions you have answered on your previous application.
  • Your current travel authorization has expired due to the two-year term being fulfilled or your passport expiring. (Note that although there is a two-year period on every approved application, if your passport expires within these two years, your travel authorization will automatically expire also.)

I am the holder of a valid, approved travel authorization. However, it expires during my stay and before I leave the U.S. Will I have to apply for a new one before leaving for the U.S.?

It’s not necessary to re-apply, as an approved ESTA is only required upon arrival into the United States.

I am a dual-citizen and my non-VWP passport has expired. Which passport should I use?

You will need to enter the most current information for all your passports and citizenships. However, use whichever VWP eligible passport you wish for your ESTA application.

Can I leave a mandatory field blank and will my application be denied if I do so?

Applicants are advised to complete each mandatory field on the form. Inaccurate information won’t necessarily result in a denial of an application, but may result in additional processing time before a decision can be reached.

Why is my employer information relevant?

Your employment info helps to establish that you are not planning on entering the United States as an immigrant. Your status for travel authorization is still, only within a non-immigrant capacity and as an individual you need to exhibit your intention of returning to your country of origin.
